In a recent statement, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska reiterated her support for keeping the name Denali for North America's tallest mountain. This comes in response to comments from President-elect Donald Trump regarding the mountain's name.
Senator Murkowski emphasized the cultural significance of the name Denali, which was given by Alaska's Koyukon Athabascans. "You can’t improve upon the name that Alaska’s Koyukon Athabascans bestowed on North America’s tallest peak, Denali – the Great One," she stated.
Murkowski highlighted her efforts in Congress to restore this traditional name as a mark of respect for Alaska's indigenous people. She added, "For years, I advocated in Congress to restore the rightful name for this majestic mountain to respect Alaska’s first people who have lived on these lands for thousands of years. This is an issue that should not be relitigated."
The debate over the mountain's name has been ongoing, with different perspectives on whether it should remain Denali or revert to its former official designation as Mount McKinley.
