U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski has announced her decision to vote against the confirmation of Kash Patel as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In a statement released on February 20, 2025, Murkowski expressed concerns about Patel's previous political activities and their potential impact on his leadership.
Murkowski acknowledged that both she and Patel agree that the FBI has strayed from its mission "to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States." She stated, "Mr. Patel and I agree the bureau has crept past that mission, become an increasingly political agency, and eroded the public’s trust." They have had several discussions on how to restore this trust, with Murkowski emphasizing the importance of agents being active in fieldwork rather than administrative roles.
However, Murkowski's reservations about Patel are linked to his prior political engagements. She stressed that "the FBI must be trusted as the federal agency that roots out crime and corruption, not focused on settling political scores." She also criticized Patel for not opposing an administration directive requiring a list of agents involved in January 6 investigations.
Despite her opposition to his confirmation, Murkowski expressed hope for a productive relationship if Patel is confirmed. She said she would work with him to address issues specific to Alaska, improve Tribal law enforcement nationwide, and implement necessary changes within the FBI. Concluding her statement, she remarked: "I truly hope that he proves me wrong about the reservations I have of him today."
