U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski engaged with Secretary of Labor nominee Lori Chavez-DeRemer during a Senate committee hearing on February 19, 2025. The discussion took place in the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and focused on Alaska's workforce needs.
Senator Murkowski emphasized the unique challenges faced by Alaska's industries. "Alaska’s key industries require distinct personnel needs in order to keep up with constantly evolving environments," she stated. She expressed her anticipation of working with Chavez-DeRemer if confirmed to ensure support for Alaska's workers and communities.
Murkowski highlighted the reliance on non-resident workers in Alaska due to geographical constraints. In particular, she noted that in 2023, 23.5% of the state's workforce was comprised of non-residents, with significant numbers in oil and gas (37.4%), mining (41.6%), and seafood processing sectors (82.8%).
The senator addressed the importance of H-2B visas for seasonal work, especially in seafood processing, which is vital for small coastal communities where local populations are insufficient to meet labor demands. Murkowski urged Chavez-DeRemer to consider legislation exempting seafood processors from H-2B visa caps.
Chavez-DeRemer committed to collaborating with Murkowski on this issue: "Yes ma'am, I will commit to working with you specifically on this issue."
Murkowski also raised concerns about childcare affordability as a barrier to workforce participation and encouraged prioritizing incentives for on-site childcare facilities.
Chavez-DeRemer affirmed her commitment: "Yes ma’am."
