U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, both representing Alaska, have introduced a Senate resolution to recognize February 16th as "Elizabeth Peratrovich Day." This national recognition honors the significant contributions of Elizabeth Peratrovich, a key figure in Alaska's civil rights movement. She was instrumental in the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945 by the Alaska Territorial Legislature, predating the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Senator Murkowski stated, “Whether it be her work to integrate public schools, laying the groundwork for ANCSA, or securing the right to vote for Alaska Natives, Elizabeth Peratrovich left an indelible mark on Alaska’s history.” She expressed honor in leading this resolution alongside Senator Sullivan to commemorate Peratrovich's contributions nationally.
Senator Sullivan remarked on Peratrovich's impact: “Elizabeth Peratrovich changed Alaska’s history—and our country’s history—for the better, fighting tirelessly for racial equality decades before the passage of the national Civil Rights Act in Congress.” He highlighted her role as a beacon during times when discrimination against Alaska Native people was prevalent. Her legacy continues to inspire Alaskans to challenge injustice and amplify marginalized voices.
This marks the third consecutive year that February 16 will be recognized nationwide as Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. Both senators anticipate unanimous support for their resolution once again.
