U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Brian Schatz have been formally recognized in their new leadership roles on the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs during an Organizational Business Meeting. Senator Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, will serve as Chairman, while Senator Schatz, a Democrat from Hawaiʻi, will take on the role of Vice Chairman. This meeting marked the committee's first gathering of the 119th Congress.
Chairman Murkowski expressed gratitude to her colleagues and highlighted shared priorities within the committee. "I want to thank my colleagues for being a part of the Indian Affairs Committee," she stated. She emphasized bipartisan cooperation as essential for achieving significant progress, saying, "The bipartisan cooperation that we saw is exactly what we need to do to accomplish big things."
Senator Schatz reflected on past achievements and praised the committee's bipartisan commitment. "None of our achievements in the last two Congresses would have been possible without this Committee’s bipartisan commitment to Native people in Hawaiʻi, in Indian Country, and in Alaska," he said.
Following their remarks, committee members unanimously agreed upon rules and funding resolutions for this session of Congress.
