Last week 15 Dimond High School and Mears Middle School Japanese Immersion families hosted exchange students from Sister City, Chitose, Japan. This is the first time Chitose students have visited Anchorage since 2019.
Mears Middle School Language Immersion Teacher Hiromi Chambers said she hopes ASD students can visit Japan this summer.
“The intention and goal is to help them make connections and build lifelong friendships through the process,” said Chambers.
During their visit, exchange students spent the weekend exploring Alaska. Students and chaperones attended a welcome event at Mears Middle School and shadowed ASD students in their classrooms.
"ASD students start learning Japanese as early as kindergarten," said Chambers. "I feel proud of our students. There was no hesitation to speak the language."
Our visitors have returned back home to Japan just in time to return to school following their winter break. Thank you to the families who hosted and our ASD community for welcoming these families.
