United States Senator Lisa Murkowski and Danish Parliament member Aaja Chemnitz have issued a joint statement regarding recent discussions about the potential purchase of Greenland by the United States. The two officials, who hold significant roles in Arctic parliamentary affairs, emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and should be regarded as an ally rather than an asset.
The statement comes in response to comments made by former President Donald Trump suggesting that the U.S. should acquire Greenland from Denmark. Murkowski and Chemnitz highlighted Greenland's strategic importance for defense and its wealth of mineral resources but reiterated that its autonomy should remain intact.
"As legislators representing Greenland in Denmark and the United States, we see a better path forward," they stated. "The United States, like Denmark, should recognize that the future will be defined by partnership, not ownership."
Murkowski and Chemnitz advocate for increased cooperation between the U.S. and Greenland on issues such as defense, mineral development, trade, and shared values of freedom and democracy. They also stressed the significance of maintaining respectful partnerships through diplomatic channels like the Arctic Council.
"The future does not require us to redraw the borders on that map but to work harder than ever across them," they added. "We believe in a stronger partnership for a brighter future across the Arctic."
The Standing Committee of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region recently convened in Tromsø, Norway. Senator Murkowski participated virtually in this meeting focused on strengthening international collaboration within the Arctic region.
