U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski has announced her decision to vote against the confirmation of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. The senator from Alaska expressed her concerns after reviewing Hegseth's nomination, including his writings, reports, and feedback from various stakeholders.
Murkowski stated, “Since Mr. Hegseth’s nomination last November, I have met with him and carefully reviewed his writings, various reports, and other pertinent materials.” She emphasized that her decision was made after a thorough evaluation process.
While acknowledging Hegseth's service to the nation and his advocacy for veterans, Murkowski highlighted her concerns about his suitability for the role. She noted that managing the Department of Defense requires extensive experience and expertise which she believes Hegseth lacks.
The senator pointed out issues related to financial mismanagement and workplace culture during Hegseth's leadership of two veteran organizations. Additionally, she expressed concern about his revised stance on women in combat roles, emphasizing the importance of honoring their commitment to national service.
Murkowski also mentioned allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking against Hegseth as factors contributing to her decision. She remarked on past behaviors admitted by Hegseth, including infidelity, which she deemed incompatible with the values expected of military leaders.
“Above all, I believe that character is the defining trait required of the Secretary of Defense,” Murkowski stated. She concluded by expressing regret over her inability to support Hegseth's nomination given current global security challenges.
