U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has joined Senators Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) in introducing a bill aimed at ensuring continued pay for United States Capitol Police, their civilian staff, and essential contractors during periods of government shutdown.

The legislation, called the Pay Our Capitol Police Act, would provide ongoing appropriations to cover the salaries of Capitol Police officers who are on active duty. It also extends to civilian employees and contractors who directly support police operations. The measure includes automatic coverage for any time when interim or full-year appropriations are not in place, applying retroactively from October 1, 2025.

Senator Murkowski stated, “U.S. Capitol Police have continued to serve Congress faithfully throughout this shutdown—and it is we who are letting them down. Our officers and their families should not have to go without pay while we in Congress blame each other for the shutdown impasse. I am immensely grateful for their service and the sacrifices they make daily. The best way we can show them our appreciation is to take care of them as they take care of us.”

If enacted, the bill would take effect immediately and remain active until either new appropriations legislation passes or September 30, 2026.
