The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution in recognition of Women’s History Month, highlighting the significant achievements, cultures, and contributions of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian women throughout U.S. history. The resolution was led by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs (SCIA), and Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI), Vice Chairman of the SCIA.
Senator Murkowski stated, "I’m proud to co-lead this resolution to honor the significant contributions of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian women to the United States." She emphasized the important roles these women have played in various fields, such as public service, business, education, STEM, the military, and the arts. She noted the contributions of influential figures from Alaska, including Laura Beltz Wright and Mary Jane Fate, as well as cultural preservation advocates like Katie John and Elizabeth Peratrovich.
Vice Chairman Schatz added, "Native women have made and continue to make immeasurable contributions to our nation’s success. This resolution marking Women’s History Month celebrates the extraordinary achievements and legacies of American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native women in shaping our shared history and future."
The resolution received support from a number of co-sponsoring senators, including Tammy Baldwin, Michael Bennet, Richard Blumenthal, Cory Booker, Maria Cantwell, Susan Collins, and Catherine Cortez Masto, among others.
