U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska has voiced her support for Chris Wright, nominated to lead the Department of Energy (DOE) in the Trump administration. During a hearing with the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Murkowski highlighted Wright's comprehensive understanding of energy issues, emphasizing his expertise in scientific, entrepreneurial, economic, and security aspects.
“To have somebody who understands energy from the scientific, entrepreneurial, economic, and security perspectives is truly, extraordinarily unique,” stated Murkowski. She expressed optimism about Wright's potential contributions to national energy discussions.
The dialogue between Murkowski and Wright covered various topics such as DOE-funded projects in Alaska under the bipartisan infrastructure law and domestic mineral production priorities. They also discussed geothermal energy potential, Arctic Energy Office expansion plans, and support for developing Alaska’s North Slope natural gas resources.
Wright acknowledged climate change as a reality during his testimony. “Absolutely, Senator,” he confirmed when asked by Murkowski about his stance on climate change. He further agreed that evolving the energy system through technology is essential to addressing climate change issues.
Murkowski emphasized using Alaska as a testing ground for new technologies due to its unique challenges with high energy costs. She highlighted Alaska’s role as a microcosm for global energy solutions: “You know this is the combination of resources, lack of infrastructure... I view Alaska as a microcosm for the world.”
In her remarks, Murkowski also stressed critical minerals' importance in securing future energy technologies and expressed concerns over U.S. reliance on foreign sources like Mozambique for graphite supplies. She urged responsible resource development domestically to avoid risks associated with international instability.
“I’m really excited about the potential that you will bring to the energy discussion in this country,” concluded Murkowski at the end of her allotted time.
