Washington, D.C.-- Representative Peltola confirmed on May 17, 2023 that she will support a discharge petition to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, alongside continued negotiations between the House Majority, Senate Majority, and White House. The Representative is currently in Alaska attending to funeral arrangements for her mother, who passed on Friday.

“Americans understand that we cannot afford to default on our debt,” said Representative Peltola. “Default would be a disaster for Alaska and America as a whole, and I think it’s important for us to have multiple options for our country to avoid this unnecessary crisis. I also believe that we must find another way than the House Majority’s bill, which would make unacceptable cuts to services in Alaska — including to the Social Security Administration and childcare. I continue to support the ongoing negotiations by all parties, and believe a discharge petition to bring a clean debt ceiling solution to the floor can provide a valuable backup option. I am currently grieving the loss of my mother, but I intend to sign the discharge petition as soon as I am able to return to D.C.”
