The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved a resolution from Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) designating October 1 as national Choose Respect Day. This day aligns with the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and is intended to promote safety, respect, and healthy relationships, especially among adolescents and young adults.
Senator Sullivan stated, “When I first launched the Choose Respect initiative as Alaska’s Attorney General, I saw the power of communities coming together to confront domestic violence and sexual assault head on. When I came to the Senate, I knew our work wasn’t over. That’s why I authored the Choose Respect Act, worked to get it signed into law, and have continued to work across the aisle to make sure survivors have access to legal services through initiatives like the POWER Act. This resolution, recognizing Choose Respect Day on the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, reaffirms that respect must be the foundation of our homes, our schools, and our communities nationwide.”
As Attorney General of Alaska, Sullivan began the state’s Choose Respect initiative by organizing rallies in various communities aimed at addressing domestic violence and sexual assault. In his role as senator, he was responsible for authoring the Choose Respect Act in 2022 and has been involved in bipartisan efforts such as the POWER Act that seek to expand legal support for survivors.
