Sen. Dan Sullivan, U.S. Senator representing Alaska, shared a series of updates on his official Twitter account in August 2025 regarding significant developments in both international diplomacy and U.S. Arctic capabilities.

On August 9, 2025, Sen. Sullivan commented on the Biden administration's foreign policy actions: "On the same day @POTUS oversaw the signing of a historic peace framework between Armenia & Azerbaijan, the President has now announced a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin fittingly located in the most strategic place in the world—Alaska. It will be an honor for our". The tweet highlights two major events: a peace agreement involving Armenia and Azerbaijan and an upcoming summit between President Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin to be held in Alaska.

Three days later, on August 12, Sen. Sullivan reported from Juneau about advancements in U.S. maritime infrastructure: "What an exciting day for Juneau, for Alaska and for America! Yesterday, I joined a number of dignitaries — including Commandant of the @USCG Admiral Kevin Lunday & @DepSec_Edgar — for the commissioning ceremony of the Storis, America’s first new icebreaker in a generation.️". The commissioning event was attended by several officials such as Admiral Kevin Lunday of the U.S. Coast Guard and Deputy Secretary Edgar.

Shortly after that post on August 12, Sen. Sullivan emphasized the significance of this new vessel: "The Storis begins to close our country’s critical icebreaker gap relative to Russia & China, and gives the Coast Guard a flexible platform to respond to emerging threats & opportunities in the Arctic. To the crew of the Storis and your families, welcome to Alaska!". This statement points out that prior to this development, both Russia and China maintained larger or more advanced icebreaker fleets compared to that of the United States.

The commissioning of USCGC Storis marks an important step toward addressing what has been widely recognized as a shortfall in American polar maritime capability relative to other global powers operating in Arctic waters.
