U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has commented on President Donald Trump’s plan to host Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday. The meeting is being described as an important diplomatic event.
Sullivan stated, “On the same day President Trump oversaw the signing of a historic peace framework between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the President has now announced a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin fittingly located in the most strategic place in the world—Alaska. It will be an honor for our state to host yet another important meeting between world leaders, as we did between President Reagan and Pope John Paul II in 1984, and between President Nixon and the Emperor of Japan in 1971. Alaskans stand ready to support this important effort for peace and welcome President Trump and his team.”
The upcoming summit follows several recent international agreements that have taken place since Trump was reelected last November. These include peace deals or ceasefires involving Armenia and Azerbaijan, Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, as well as Egypt and Ethiopia. During his first term, Trump was responsible for brokering the Abraham Accords, which established formal relations between Israel and Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Sudan.
