U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, conducted a nomination hearing for Mr. William “Billy” Kirkland, nominated by President Trump for the role of Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs within the Department of the Interior.
Senator Murkowski highlighted the critical nature of this position in maintaining trust and partnerships between the federal government and tribal nations. "The Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs is an important position at the Interior Department," she stated.
During her questioning, Murkowski addressed several pressing issues, including resolving the probate backlog affecting Indian Country. "We’ve got some cases in Alaska which date back to the 1990s and early 2000s," she noted.
Murkowski also discussed public safety challenges in rural Alaska, emphasizing a new model for law enforcement in these communities. She referenced Attorney General Barr's description of a "rural public safety crisis" and sought assurance from Kirkland regarding federal funding reports.
Infrastructure needs amid climate change were another focus, with Murkowski pointing out threats like erosion and flooding in communities such as Newtok and Napakiak. She urged Kirkland to commit to releasing necessary funds.
Public broadcasting was also addressed, particularly after recent funding cuts impacting rural and tribal areas. "Just yesterday we got an alert...it was public radio that basically told people to get to higher ground," said Murkowski.
Kirkland confirmed his commitment to working on these issues if confirmed. The Committee will accept written testimony until July 24, 2025.
