U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski engaged with Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins during a subcommittee meeting to discuss the Department of Veteran Affairs’ budget request for Fiscal Year 2026. The focus was on addressing the unique needs of Alaska's veterans, particularly those in rural areas.

Senator Murkowski emphasized the challenges faced by veterans in Alaska due to its vast and complex geography. "We’re very proud to host more veterans per capita in Alaska than anywhere else out there," she stated, highlighting issues such as long travel distances and limited broadband access that complicate healthcare delivery.

Secretary Collins acknowledged these challenges and expressed willingness to explore new strategies beyond traditional models. "I want us to break out of the model that everything has to be the way we’ve always done it," he said, suggesting mobile clinics as a potential solution for delivering primary care in rural areas.

The discussion also covered tribal health concerns. Senator Murkowski expressed satisfaction with a reimbursement agreement between IHS and VA but sought confirmation on the continuation of key advisory bodies. "Know that the committee really does play a vital role in ensuring that Native voices are represented when VA policies are developed," she remarked.

Collins confirmed both the Office of Tribal Government Relations and the VA Advisory Committee on Tribal and Indian Affairs would continue their work, emphasizing strengthened outreach efforts. He also mentioned plans to visit Alaska later this year, potentially coinciding with an important conference.

Murkowski concluded by noting her intention to submit additional questions regarding local infrastructure projects and upcoming technology rollouts within Alaska's VA system.
