U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has secured a commitment from U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick to hold a summit with stakeholders in Alaska's fishing industry. The meeting aims to address trade issues with Russia and explore ways the administration can support the sector.
During a hearing by the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, Murkowski stressed the significance of fair-trade practices for Alaska's fishermen. Secretary Lutnick agreed, stating that the administration’s trade policy "is to protect our fisherman, which are a key resource of the United States of America." He pledged to work with Murkowski and industry leaders to find solutions.
Murkowski highlighted concerns about Russia's actions against Alaska seafood and its impact on local fisheries. She noted that seafood processing constitutes 70% of Alaska’s manufacturing employment and generates $6 billion in economic output while employing 48,000 people.
In addition to trade issues, Murkowski addressed staffing shortages at the National Weather Service in Alaska and problems with aging infrastructure like the Seal Rocks Weather Buoy near Valdez. Lutnick acknowledged these concerns and committed to addressing them.
The discussions also touched on aviation safety and NOAA budget cuts affecting essential services. Murkowski emphasized the need for operational systems critical to transportation, commerce, and safety.
Lutnick assured cooperation in modernizing outdated systems and maintaining their functionality to ensure safety is not compromised.
