FOIA Request to University of Alaska Anchorage Regarding Chinese National Students on June 3, 2025.

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, SC Alaska News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University of Alaska Anchorage. The request seeks detailed information about Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.

The request, filed under the Alaska Open Records Law, A.S. Code § 40-25-110 et seq., asks for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If certain information is protected, we have requested a total number of these students broken down by department.

Additionally, we have asked for documents detailing any scholarships received by these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. Specifically, we seek information on scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Furthermore, our request includes any policies or procedures that describe how the university monitors students, including Chinese Nationals, to protect its Intellectual Property and other confidential information.

This request is made in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating state and federal governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws. As members of the media, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities in holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We believe this qualifies us for a fee waiver as media professionals.

We look forward to receiving this information promptly and will continue to update our readers as new details emerge.
