During a recent U.S. Senate Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee hearing, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska engaged with FBI Director Kash Patel on significant public safety issues affecting the state. The focus was on addressing the challenges posed by Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) cases and fentanyl-related deaths in Alaska.

Senator Murkowski highlighted the importance of recognizing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Awareness Day, noting that many Alaskans are deeply concerned about these issues. She emphasized the need for continued efforts to resolve cold cases involving indigenous persons through initiatives like 'Operation Not Forgotten.' Murkowski expressed her desire for assurance that these cases will not be neglected.

Director Patel responded by acknowledging the significance of crimes in Indian Country and reiterated his commitment to treating all crimes equally. He shared his recent engagement with Tribal leaders at the Department of the Interior and detailed efforts to improve cooperation between FBI agents and tribal communities. Patel mentioned an operation in Wind River that intercepted a large quantity of fentanyl destined for an Indian reservation as part of their ongoing efforts.

Murkowski also raised concerns about the lack of Victim Service Coordinators in Alaska's FBI field offices, which has led to communication gaps with affected families. She urged Patel to address this issue within budget considerations.

The discussion then shifted to Alaska's rising fentanyl crisis, where Murkowski noted a 40% increase in related deaths in 2023. She stressed the need for more aggressive measures to intercept drugs entering Alaska through various channels such as air travel, mail, or boats. Murkowski questioned whether FBI resources were being diverted from tackling this crisis towards immigration enforcement activities.

In response, Director Patel assured Senator Murkowski that additional resources would be allocated to Alaska as part of broader field movements. He committed to working closely with her office to ensure that both MMIWG cases and the fentanyl crisis receive necessary attention.
