U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Brian Schatz have issued a statement in recognition of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMIWR). Senator Murkowski, who chairs the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, highlighted the importance of acknowledging families and communities affected by violence against Indigenous women. She stated, “On this day of awareness we acknowledge the families and communities who have lost loved ones to violence and those impacted by the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and people.”
Senator Murkowski emphasized progress made through advocacy from Native communities but stressed the need for continued efforts. "We must continue to raise awareness and demand justice," she said. She called for collaboration among federal, state, and Tribal governments to protect Native peoples.
Senator Schatz, vice chairman of the committee, underscored the urgency of addressing this crisis. He remarked, “Too many Native families have endured the pain of a missing loved one or a violent loss with no answers and no justice.” He affirmed that action is necessary to ensure truth, safety, and accountability for victims and their families.
The statement reflects ongoing efforts by lawmakers to address issues faced by Indigenous communities in relation to violence against women.
