U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Raphael Warnock have introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at reducing housing costs for servicemembers across the United States, including Alaska. The Basic Allowance for Housing Restoration Act seeks to restore full housing allowances for military personnel, reversing a previous reduction from 100% to 95% coverage implemented in Fiscal Year 2015.
Senator Murkowski emphasized the financial burden faced by military families due to high living costs, particularly in Alaska. "No member of our military should have to pay exorbitant out-of-pocket costs to have a roof over their head while serving our nation," she stated. Senator Warnock echoed these sentiments, highlighting Georgia's significant military presence and expressing his commitment to ensuring affordable housing for servicemembers.
The proposed legislation has garnered support from various organizations, including the Military Officers Association of America and The American Legion. Companion legislation was also introduced in the House by Representatives Marilyn Strickland and Don Bacon earlier this month.
