U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska recently opposed S.J.Res.10, a resolution aiming to end the national energy emergency declared by President Trump on January 20, 2025. Murkowski addressed the Senate floor to highlight the pressing energy issues facing Alaska, including supply challenges in Southcentral regions, high costs in rural areas, and low throughput in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System.
Murkowski stated her opposition clearly: "Mr. President, I join my colleague from Utah, the Chairman of the Energy Committee, in speaking today in clear opposition to Senate Joint Resolution 10." She further explained her stance by acknowledging that while she is often critical of presidential directions she disagrees with, on this issue she believes President Trump has "absolutely, positively, clearly hit the mark."
The senator emphasized Alaska's potential as a resource-rich state but noted current difficulties such as importing LNG from Canada despite abundant local resources. She described an "energy emergency" where residents spend up to half their income on basic energy needs and face exorbitant prices for essentials like milk and laundry detergent due to high transportation costs.
She also highlighted federal control over lands impacting oil production opportunities and a partially filled pipeline that could operate more effectively if permitted expansion occurred. The senator lamented obstacles to accessing critical minerals vital for national security and economic independence from China.
Murkowski expressed gratitude for President Trump's efforts through an executive order aimed at maximizing Alaska’s energy potential: "I’m very thankful for President Trump and the administration for the focus that they have given to the state of Alaska."
In conclusion, Murkowski reiterated her belief in utilizing all available resources—renewables included—to strengthen America’s economy and geopolitical standing: "We need to be unleashing our resources...it’s all part of the energy basket...it’s good for our economy."
