U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Tina Smith have seen their legislative efforts advance with the Senate's approval of the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act of 2024. This act includes provisions from Murkowski's Native ELDER Act, aimed at enhancing federal support for Alaska Native, American Indian, and Native Hawaiian Elders. The bill now moves to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Senator Murkowski stated, "The Older Americans Act was created to provide support for Americans as they age," emphasizing its role in ensuring access to resources that promote healthy living and independence.

Murkowski highlighted feedback from stakeholders about the needs of Native Elders, stating, "We must ensure that Elders have the support they need to age in the communities they call home." She expressed pride in including provisions from the Native ELDER Act in this reauthorization.

April Kyle, President and CEO of Southcentral Foundation, noted the legislation aligns with their work supporting Elders' independence. Brian Ridley of Tanana Chiefs Conference added that it offers a robust program for rural Alaska's home care utilization.

Billie Tohee from the National Indian Council on Aging appreciated Murkowski's leadership in addressing Tribal priorities through this legislation. William Smith of the National Indian Health Board emphasized its significance for native elder care.

The reauthorization builds on previous efforts like the Strengthening Services for Native Elders Act included in 2020's OAA reauthorization. The current act aims to establish an Older Americans Tribal Advisory Committee and enhance tribal service delivery infrastructure.
