Anchorage, AK – On July 11, Mayor Dave Bronson released the following statement in advance of the Assembly's potential vote to bring the former Golden Lion Hotel online as low-income housing:
On July 11, the Assembly has the opportunity to make 80 new housing units available to vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness in Anchorage. Turning on the former Golden Lion Hotel as low-income housing makes sense for our community, taxpayers, and those experiencing homelessness. I have been committed to this effort since January, while continually seeking a path forward for the Tudor/Elmore shelter.
The latest count of unsheltered individuals in Anchorage stands at roughly 775. We can make a sizeable dent in that figure tonight and move Anchorage one step closer toward accomplishing our shared goal of reaching functional zero. I encourage the Assembly to do the humane thing and help get folks off the street into a caring, clean, and safe environment where they can restore their dignity.
