#ASDShineBright Happy snowy Friday! What a perfect time to introduce Chilly, Diggs, and their musher Latico of Lake Otis Elementary School.
In the spirit of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, sixth grade teachers Latico and Jane vonBirgelen taught students about tag sleds, the physics related to the positions of the 14 dogs in a mushing line, and the equipment the dogs and athletes use. After the classroom portion of the lesson, students spent time outside and got the opportunity to handle the dogs themselves.
"It's important to incorporate the outside world into the student's education," said Latico. "We track the Iditarod when it's happening. This allowed them to make a hands on connection."
Chilly and Diggs are brother and sister and have been mushing with Latico for three months. Latico said she has friends who have been mushing for years that have helped support through the learning process during the trio's first winter together. The dogs have been super friendly with students to include and even paid a visit to Chinook Elementary Anchorage students.
Thank you for sharing, Lake Otis Huskies! Keep shining bright.
