Good afternoon ASD families,

A friendly reminder and review to help you better prepare for Monday's new school day schedule.

As you know, our school day extends 30 minutes starting Monday, January 30. The Snow Days Makeup Days plan was approved this week and we want to help you be prepared. We appreciate your flexibility as we navigate the next six weeks together.

Dates to remember: January 30th to March 9th: 30 minutes will be added to the end of the instructional day

February 22nd and 23rd: Students attend school (Parent-teacher conferences are canceled)

February 24th: Students attend school

A note on transportation: all bus stops times will change to be exactly 30 minutes later than the current drop off time. Bus route information will be updated in Q Parent

Connection today at 5.

How did we get here? In short, Anchorage was hit with record breaking snowfall resulting in six snow days in the month of December and seven snow days total for the first semester of the school year. ASD builds two anticipated snow days into its calendar year, which means we have five days that must be made up. Our website can help you understand how the additional 30 minutes impacts the bell schedule for elementary, middle, and high school students. asdk12.org/makeup

We are aware that families caring for students with special needs require a structured schedule in most cases. ASD encourages open communication and partnership between families and schools. Your principal is prepared to work with you during this time.

For future weather closures- Principals and teachers are prepared to implement remote learning if schools close for in-person learning again this school year due to weather. Plans to pivot to remote learning were created before winter break. Secondary teachers are ready to implement learning through Canvas and elementary schools came up with their own plans and have already shared out to their families what remote learning will look like.

We know that we have asked a lot from our families and staff this school year. An important consideration in the final decision was minimizing the disruption to staff and family schedules, while also restoring lost instructional time for students. We continuously review and update FAQs on the website: asdk12.org/makeup. Please reach out if you have additional questions. Thank you for your support in working with us for the best outcome for students and for your continued commitment to public education.

-Team ASD
