Verizon Releases Statement regarding Seldovia Cell Tower and Service Updates

The City of Seldovia and Seldovia Village Tribe have been in touch with Verizon staff regarding cellular service and operations regarding the newly constructed tower.
Verizon has issued the following statement:
"Continuing with our very aggressive build in Alaska, we have constructed a cell site to provide service in Seldovia. In order to turn that tower on air, we need to run fiber to the tower, which will carry data from that cell site through the rest of the network. We anticipate having that fiber deployed in the fall and the tower on air by the end of the year."
Improvements made to get the cell tower operational include running a cable from Alaska Communications equipment located at the adjacent property to the tower with a microwave signal sent via the repeating tower across Seldovia Bay to provide backhaul (“signal”) from Homer. The City of Seldovia and Seldovia Village Tribe will keep Seldovia informed on the progress being made to bring 4G to the community.
Per Verizon’s website, “We are actively decommissioning our 3G CDMA network and expect to be completed by no later than December 31, 2022….After December 31, 2022, if you are a Verizon customer still using a device that is 3G (CDMA), 4G that does not support HD Voice (Non-VoLTE), or 1X, the device will no longer be able to send or receive text messages, use data services, or make or receive calls, including emergency 911, on the Verizon network. Until this date, your device will still be able to use these services.”
