Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day! We hope everyone is having a fun and safe extended holiday weekend with family and friends. Here are a few facts about 4th Of July, feel free to comment any fun facts you'd like to share.

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies' separation from Great Britain.

The 50th star was added to the American flag on July 4, 1960. It symbolized Hawaii's admission as the U.S.'s 50th state.

There were only about 2.5 million people living in the United States in 1776.

That number is drastically different from the approximately 332 million people that live here today!

There were 56 signers to the Declaration of Independence and among them a committee of five (Benjamin  Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston) drafted the declaration.

Fireworks date back as a tradition of Independence Day as early as the first anniversary in 1777. However, we strongly encourage our community to please follow local fire safety guidance from AFD and Anchorage Police Department
