Installation Of A New Service

Sewer

It's informational Monday on a Wednesday...

While we have water on the brain, due to the daily additional 100,000+ gallon loss of treated water occurring from spring leaks in the system, we thought it would be a good time to provide a reminder on who is responsible for water and sewer service installation and repairs as well as who is authorized to exercise keyboxes and turn water services on and off.

There really are only two main components for utility services: (1) the connection which runs from the main to the property line and (2) the extension which extends from the connection to the building. The City for the most part is responsible for installing and maintaining the connection (unless repair is needed due to freezing) and the property owner is responsible for installing and maintaining the extension. Installation for water and sewer connections may be charged to the property owner at cost +20% admin surcharge.

Additionally, per Seldovia Municipal Code 13.04.210 Service turn-ons and turnoffs, water may be turned on or off only by authorized personnel of the Seldovia Water Utility. This along with the City adding routine exercising of keyboxes to the calendar and inspections to extension installations is to help prevent some of the spring leak problems we are seeing now from continuing to happen in the future. In short these measures help protect the integrity of the utility system.

No one wants to see us lose any additional treated drinking water in the ground, especially our public works crew. After all, 2/3rds more water production as a result of leaks means 2/3rds more expenses that the water utility incurs.
