City of Seldovia issued the following announcement on March 15.

It's informational Monday and today we are talking about the city budget process.

The City of Seldovia operates on a July 1- June 30 fiscal year (the same as the State of Alaska). The City Manager is tasked with presenting a budget proposal to the Seldovia City Council at least eight weeks prior to the end of the fiscal year (by the first meeting in May). The Seldovia City Council has the fiduciary duty to review and adopt a budget at least 20 days prior to the end of the fiscal year that is sound and allows the city to operate for the upcoming fiscal year.

There is a lot of information to cover and review in the City's budget, including; the general fund, which includes items such as, public safety, administration, council, public works, etc., and the special revenue funds, such as, water, sewer, harbor, boat haul out and the city dock. Special revenue funds are departments that receive revenue for their services, the general fund covers services that do not receive direct funds for services provided.

Then there is the fee schedule which is adopted annually along with the budget in order to account for all the fees the city charges for from cemetery plots, copies, harbor moorage, water and sewer, and so on.

This is a big project that typically begins in January every year and takes up to half a year of discussions, not withstanding the ongoing conversations throughout the year, such as, 'closing the gap'.  

Discussions with the Seldovia City Council are held in the public and the City of Seldovia and Seldovia City Council encourage and appreciate public participation during the process, after all we work for the community!

Upcoming budget meetings are or will be noticed on the city website, at the Seldovia Post Office, the City Office, and the multipurpose building prior to being held and the public is encouraged to attend.

There have already been a few council work sessions pertaining to the budget and those can be found on the City of Seldovia YouTube Channel. Written public comments can be dropped off at the City Office, emailed to the City Clerk at cityclerk@cityofseldovia.com, or given in person or virtually during council work sessions and council meetings.
