Bayshore Elementary recently issued the following announcement.
Battle of the Books will soon begin! It’s a free extra-curricular school program at Bayshore which will meet via Zoom.
Third & Fourth graders will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30–4:30 in Room 13, beginning October 7th.
Fifth and Sixth graders will meet on Monday afternoons from 3:30–4:30 in Room 30, beginning Monday, Oct. 11th.
Battle of the Books is a reading motivational program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians and is open to ALL students in grades three through six. The goal of the program is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence.
Students will read the recommended list of books for their grade level and meet with the group on a regular basis to discuss the books and practice quiz-style questions. Then, by December, students will form groups of three or four (either on their own or with assistance), and they will compete against other teams in January in a quest to score the highest in a question-and-answer style game show event. Comprehension of the stories is key in getting the answers correct and scoring highly. The two teams with the highest scores at the 3rd/4th grade “Bayshore Battle Off” will compete at a local school in the District Battle of the Books in January. The exact date is to be determined.
Attendance at practices is crucial to team success. Students may not miss any practices during January. Students should not miss more than 2 practices in October, November, and December unless prior arrangements have been made with the Battle of the Books coach.
