City of Seldovia issued the following announcement on March 9.
At their February 14th regular meeting, Seldovia City Council passed a motion of support for the City’s pursuit of FY23 RAISE grant funding for the City’s marine transportation infrastructure.
Per the US Department of Transportation’s website, RAISE (Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity) “…provides a unique opportunity for the DOT to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve national objectives.
Previously known as the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) and Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grants, Congress has dedicated nearly $9.9 billion for thirteen rounds of National Infrastructure Investments to fund projects that have a significant local or regional impact.
In each competition, DOT receives hundreds of applications to build and repair critical pieces of our freight and passenger transportation networks. The RAISE program enables DOT to examine these projects on their merits to help ensure that taxpayers are getting the highest value for every dollar invested.”

The deadline for the RAISE grant is April 14th and despite it being budget season, the City will do its best to submit a thorough, detailed application for the US Department of Transportation’s consideration. We found out from another Alaskan city that they had to try 3 times before receiving RAISE grant funds.
For Calendar Year 2022, Seldovia City Council identified maintenance to Jakolof Bay Dock as a top priority. The Seldovia Small Boat Harbor also has over $6,000,000 of estimated repairs needed based on the 2011 Technical Study produced by the Army Corps (you can read that report on the City’s Harbor webpage here: https://cityofseldovia.com/harbormaster-office
).
The City will be looking out for funding to assist the City in maintaining its marine transportation infrastructure and on behalf of the Seldovia City Council, greatly appreciates the community’s support of this endeavor.
