ALASKA STATE TROOPERS: Phishing Scams related to COVID-19

Scam wordcloud

Alaska State Troopers issued the following announcement on March 14.

A top priority for the State is to provide for the safety and wellbeing of its citizens. We ask citizens to exercise greater care when opening email attachments, links in emails, or phone calls related to the Coronavirus that are not from official sources. The State Security Office has been notified of an increase in the number of phishing scams related to the COVID-19 outbreak. Cybercriminals are seeking to use the current situation to their advantage. In one phishing campaign, cybercriminals sent emails that looked like they came from the World Health Organization, asking people to click on a malicious link to view coronavirus safety measures. Calls and emails from cybercriminals will typically attempt to create heightened fear and a strong sense of urgency to pressure people into providing personal or sensitive information.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) staff will never ask for credit card information regarding Coronavirus testing. DHSS has created the following website http://coronavirus.alaska.gov/ for official communication and updates to the public.

The State Security Office and the Department of Public Safety recommend that, in the event you have fallen victim to a phishing email or phone scam, you contact either your local law enforcement or the FBI at https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx.
